Exploring Landscape through Woodcut
THE ART OF RELIEF PRINTMAKING
Winslow Art Center – ONLINE ART CLASS
Dates: Tuesdays, May 5-26, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM-12:00 PM Pacific Time
Discover the art of woodcut printmaking through landscape in this 4-week online woodcut class. Explore how trees, water, sky, and terrain can be translated into bold, graphic compositions carved from woodblocks.
Drawing from traditional and contemporary woodblock print practices, as well as artists such as William S. Rice, Gustave Baumann, and Frances Gearhart, students will learn to interpret landscape through shape, value, and mark-making.
Over four weekly sessions (2 hours each), this class guides students through the full process of learning printmaking online, from developing imagery and planning compositions to carving woodblocks and hand-printing finished prints. Emphasis is placed on creating a sense of depth, atmosphere, and place through the language of woodcut.
We will print by hand onto Japanese washi using Cranfield Safe Wash Relief Inks, which are non-toxic, easy to clean, and ideal for at-home printmaking without a press.
This online woodcut class is suitable for beginners and experienced printmakers alike. Beginners will have access to supplemental videos covering essential techniques, while more advanced students are encouraged to develop personal and expressive approaches to landscape.
