THE WONDERS OF WOODCUT: IN COLOR
Winslow Art Center – ONLINE ART CLASS
Dates: Tuesdays, August 5-19, 2025
Time: 10:00 AM-12:00 PM Pacific Time
Make colorful, multi-layered woodcut prints in this 3 week workshop!
This workshop explores the foundations of woodcut printmaking and delves into the expressive possibilities of layered color to create rich, dynamic imagery.
Taking after the great woodcut artists of the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century (ex: Gustave Baumann, Frances Gearhart, William Rice), you’ll craft vibrant, multi-layered prints while learning the techniques of designing, carving, and aligning color layers. We’ll be hand-printing on fine Japanese washi using Caligo Safe Wash Relief Inks—ideal for home use with easy soap-and-water cleanup. Designed with beginners in mind, this class also welcomes advanced students and offers personalized guidance for all skill levels.
Experimentation is encouraged. All levels welcome!
WOODBLOCK: CRASH COURSE
Pratt Fine Arts Center Seattle WA
SATURDAY
7/26
10a-5p
Explore the timeless art of woodcut printmaking in this one-day introductory workshop led by artist Charles Spitzack. This workshop will guide you through the entire process of creating woodcut prints, from the initial stages of designing an image to the final steps of inking and producing your own unique art. You'll learn how to translate your designs onto wood, safely use the woodcutting tools, and how to successfully print by hand.
This class uses Japanese washi printmaking paper and Cranfield Safe Wash Relief Ink. This ink allows for easy clean-up and eliminates the need for ventilation in your home studio or chemicals often used in oil-based printmaking. You’ll use brayers to apply the ink evenly across the surface of your carved block, and a Japanese Baren to print by hand onto paper. You also will have access to printing on an etching press.

Unlike many Western printmaking methods, Mokuhanga is done entirely by hand. Over the course of two days, you’ll learn everything you need to begin your own Mokuhanga journey!
