WOODCUTS: EXPLORING ARCHITECTURE THROUGH PRINTMAKING
Winslow Art Center – ONLINE ART CLASS
Dates: Tuesdays, October 21-November 11, 2025
Time: 10:00 AM-12:00 PM Pacific Time
Discover the art of woodcut printmaking while exploring the forms, structures, and rhythms of architecture. In this 4-week workshop, you’ll translate buildings, cityscapes, and architectural details into striking, layered woodcut prints.
Guided by the techniques of traditional and modern woodcut artists, you’ll learn how to design, carve, and print compositions inspired by everything from intricate facades to sweeping urban skylines. We’ll hand-print on Japanese washi using Cranfield Safe Wash Relief Inks that are safe, easy to clean, and perfect for home studios.
While this class is designed for students with some printmaking experience, supplemental instructional videos will be provided for those just starting out in woodcut, so beginners can follow along and gain confidence. Emphasis is placed on experimentation, composition, and translating architectural forms into expressive prints.
Bring your curiosity and eye for structure, whether drawn to historic buildings, modern designs, or abstracted architectural elements, this class invites you to see and create architecture in a whole new way.
Experimentation is encouraged. All levels welcome!

This technique, which blossomed during Japan’s Edo period (1600-1868), uses water-based pigments to create vibrant prints on washi paper. Unlike many Western printmaking methods, Mokuhanga is done entirely by hand. Over the course of two days, you’ll learn everything you need to begin your own Mokuhanga journey!
